Abhay Sharma in race to become Team India’s fielding coach

New Delhi. Former first-class cricketer Abhay Sharma, who has worked extensively with India A, India U-19 and the national women’s team, on Friday applied for the post of fielding coach of the national men’s team. Sharma will be one of the strong contenders for the role of fielding coach. The team’s current fielding coach R Sridhar’s tenure along with most of the support staff, including head coach Ravi Shastri, will come to an end after the T20 World Cup.

“Abhay’s (Sharma) application has come today,” a BCCI source told PTI.

The last date for sending applications is November 3. The 52-year-old fielding coach has worked extensively with the India A and U-19 teams under Rahul Dravid as the head coach.

Dravid has applied for the post of head coach of the national team. Another India A coach Paras Mhambrey has applied for the bowling coach post.

Sharma has played 89 first-class matches in domestic cricket representing Delhi, Railways and Rajasthan. He has been the fielding coach of the Indian team that toured Zimbabwe in 2016 and then the US and West Indies. During the recent tour of the Indian women’s team to Britain, ODI and Test captain Mithali Raj, T20 team captain Harmanpreet Kaur and other women cricketers praised her work. On this tour, Harleen Kaur took a brilliant catch near the boundary line.

Sharma has been a part of the World Cup thrice with the Under-19 team. He has been a part of the team on almost 10 tours of India A.
