Ashes 2021-22: Chris Silverwood insists he’s right man for the position of England’s coach

  • England lost by nine wickets in Brisbane and 275 runs in Adelaide
  • Team selection came under severe criticism after two consecutive defeats in the ongoing Ashes series
  • Silverwood is also England’s chief selector

Despite England’s crushing defeat in the first two Tests in the Ashes series, the under-fire head coach Chris Silverwood defended his team’s selection. At the same time, he also expressed that he is still the right person for the position of coach. England lost by nine wickets in Brisbane and 275 runs in Adelaide, drawing strong criticism for the team selection.

The visiting team decided not to play the experienced pair of James Anderson and Stuart Broad on the green Brisbane pitch while adding spinner Jack Leach. The left-arm spinner’s performance was poor, taking a wicket for 102 runs in 13 overs and was dropped in the second Test. This forced England to rely on Root, David Malan and Ollie Robinson for spin at the Adelaide Oval.

Silverwood is also England’s chief selector. When asked whether he would choose this team? So he replied, “To be honest, I would do that. There will always be divided opinions. You pick a team and not necessarily everyone agrees with you but I am happy with our skills in the pink ball test so I will pick this team again.”

The third Test begins in Melbourne on ‘Boxing Day’ and Silverwood reiterated his stand on Tuesday ahead of the team’s departure. “We picked the best attack for those conditions and you can see our attack had a lot of experience in it. I was happy with that attack in this match and I was happy with my attack in the last match as well,” he said.

Under Silverwood’s guidance, England have lost nine matches in the last 11 Tests and won only one. Many former players believe that he should take responsibility for the two defeats. Former captain Michael Atherton is also included in these former players.

Silverwood said, “Am I the right person to help players get better? Yes, I believe I am. We had some conversations and I believe I have the right coaching staff with me to do that.”

Jofra Archer’s second elbow operation, ruled out of the series against West Indies

He said, “When you hold a position like this you accept what your job is. It’s like that. Do I think I’m the right person for it? Yes, I agree, otherwise I would Never take this position. You’re always under pressure, isn’t it?”
