Ben Stokes should not be made captain by force – David Gower

After England’s dismal performance in the Ashes series, many former cricketers started advocating for Ben Stokes to be the captain of the Test team by replacing Joe Root. But former captain David Gower, looking at Stokes’ form, has said that he should not forcefully hand over the captaincy. Stokes has returned to international cricket after a long break through the Ashes series, but he has not been able to make a mark so far.

England are currently trailing 0-3 in the 5-match Test series. The fourth match of the series is to be played in Sydney from January 5. Criticizing the England Test team leadership, Gower on Tuesday said that now is not the time to make Stokes the captain.

“However, Stokes can play it well, as he is a very natural and strong man of character. That’s the kind of character England needs at the moment,” Gower told Sportsday on Sen Radio on Tuesday.

“The next two matches are to be in Sydney and Hobart. After that, when they go to the UK and start again, they will need to find new ways to do that,” said the 64-year-old England great.

On the relationship between Root and Stokes, Gower said that both are good players and they are completely loyal to each other.
