Usha Uthup was born on 8 November 1947 in a Tamil family in Mumbai. His father Vaidyanath Someshwar Sami was originally from Chennai and worked in the police department. Being in the police, Usha’s childhood was spent in a very disciplined manner. Usha has not taken any formal training in music. However, the atmosphere in the house was of music, which affected them. She used to listen to the songs of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan on the radio. Therefore, he had an understanding of music at an early age. He performed his first stage show at the age of just nine.

Usha had told in an old interview that she started her singing career by singing in nightclubs. She started making a mark in the music industry at a time when it was believed that the female singer’s voice should be very sweet and thin. But his voice was heavy. It is said that he was also expelled from the music class because of his voice. Who thought then that people would dance fiercely on the song of Usha Uthup. In an interview about her voice, she says, because of my voice, women considered their husbands safe from me. Those women used to think that its voice is so heavy that their husbands will stay away from me.

Usha Uthup, who sang in more than 22 languages, used to sing more English songs in the 70s. That’s why he was also criticized. He had said in one of his interviews, ‘People used to taunt me for singing English, but I am a music lover. I can sing in any language.

In the year 1970, he sang a song for a film for the first time. He lent his voice to the song Jogan Pritam Ki from the film ‘Devi’. After this, in the year 1971, he sang a song from Dev Anand’s film Hare Rama Hare Krishna with Asha Bhosle. After this, he constantly got offers to sing in films. Usha became an established artist in the music industry with the song ‘Ek Do Teen Cha Cha’ from the film ‘Shalimar’.

Usha Uthup sang a lot of hit songs with music directors RD Burman and Bappi Lahiri of her era in Hindi cinema. Superhits like ‘Dum Maaro Dum’, ‘Shaan Se’, ‘Ramba Ho’ and ‘Mehbooba’ still remain on people’s tongue.
