Liquor ban should end in Bihar, Liquor companies’ organization CIABC demanded from the government

New Delhi. The Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies has urged the Bihar government to end prohibition in the state. “The Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC) has urged the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in Bihar to reconsider the end of prohibition in the state,” the confederation said in a statement.

The confederation has suggested Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to take several steps to ensure his stated goals of helping women without prohibition. In a letter to the leaders of NDA constituents- Janata Dal (United), Bharatiya Janata Party, Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) and Vikassheel Insaan Party, the CIABC has said that Bihar is paying a heavy price for the prohibition policy.

Illegal and spurious liquor is being sold in the state, crime gangs involved in this illegal business have emerged and the government is losing huge revenue. The confederation said that in such a situation, the development and progress of Bihar has been affected, as the state is losing revenue due to the closure of legal liquor trade, which is about Rs 10,000 crore per year. The CIABC’s letter comes in the wake of recent incidents of spurious liquor, in which over 40 people lost their lives in four districts.

Since the Nitish Kumar government banned alcohol in the state in April 2016, around 150 people have lost their lives in various liquor tragedies. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has called a high level meeting on 16 November regarding the prohibition of liquor in the state.
