New Delhi. There is a strange situation in the Indian car market. On one hand, the wait for customers to get the keys of their dream car is increasing day by day, while car companies are also troubled by the declining sales of cars due to semiconductors. Vehicle dealers’ body Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) on Wednesday said retail sales of passenger vehicles declined by 11 per cent in December this year as compared to the previous year.

FADA said the semiconductor shortage crisis still persists. Retail sales of passenger vehicles fell 10.91 per cent last month to 2,44,639 units from 2,74,605 units in December 2020. FADA President Vinkesh Gulati said in a statement that the month of December usually sees higher sales as manufacturers give a lot of discounts for the sale of vehicles in view of the change of year.

But this time it did not happen and retail sales were disappointing. He said the problem of semiconductor shortage persisted due to which sales remained low despite a large number of bookings. Sales of two wheelers were also down last month. In December 2021, 11,48,732 vehicles were sold, which is 19.86 percent less than the total sales of 14,33,334 vehicles in December 2020.

However, on the other hand, retail sales of commercial vehicles registered a growth of 13.72 per cent over the previous year. A total of 58,847 vehicles were sold last month as against 51,749 vehicles were sold in December 2020. Last month, a total of 15,58,756 vehicles of various types were retailed, which is 16.05 per cent lower as compared to 18,56,869 vehicles sold in December 2020.
