It is mentioned in Matsya and Bhavishya Purana that when a person fasts on Ekadashi and eats on Dwadashi, whether in Shukla Paksha or Krishna Paksha, he observes a big fast in honor of Vishnu. Vaishnavas have to fast on all Ekadashis. There is a long statement on Ekadashi-mahatmya in Narada Purana – The fuel of sins committed in thousands of lives is burnt to ashes by the fire generated by Ekadashi fasting. Ekadashi bestows heaven and salvation. Gives kingdom and sons.

The Padma Purana has praised Ekadashi—fasting—one should wake up at night to please Hari by fasting on Ekadashi and decorate the Vishnu temple. It is mentioned in Varaha Purana that Brahma gave Ekadashi to Kubera and Kubera gave it to the person who is restrained, pure. eats only what is not cooked; Kubera gives everything when he is pleased.

It has been mentioned in Naradpuran – Munishwar people can consume root, fruits, milk and water on Ekadashi. It is mentioned in Matsya Purana that those who are incapable of fasting on Ekadashi should eat Nakta food (only at night), if anyone is sick, he can ask his son or someone else to fast on his behalf. The underlying concept of fasting on Ekadashi proves to be spiritual. This is the discipline of the mind.

24 Ekadashi in twelve months
The religious nature of Ekadashi is broad and twenty-four Ekadashis of twelve months and two Ekadashis of Malamas have different names. From Chaitra Shukla to Ekadashi, the 24 names are respectively – Kamada, Varuthini, Mohini, Apara, Nirjala, Yogini, Shayani, Kamika, Putrada, Aja, Parivartini, Indira, Papankusha, Rama, Prabodhini, Genesis, Mokshada, Saphala, Shatpada. , Jaya, Vijaya, Amalaki and Papmochani. The names of the two Ekadashis of Malamas are Kamala and Kamada according to Padma Purana but in AhalyaKamdhenu there are Kaivalyada and Swargada.

There are some restrictions in Ekadashi fasting. This fast is not broken even if a person dies. The common religions namely forgiveness, truth, mercy, charity, defecation, sense-control, deity-worship, home, contentment and asteya are observed in all the fasts. Vegetation, meat, lentils, sex, gaming, excessive water intake should be abandoned. According to the Matsya Purana, these twelve sacrifices are – bronze vessels, meat, sura, honey, oil, false speech, exercise, travel, divasvapa (day sleep), earning money, tilpishta and lentils.
