New Delhi. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Monday that the government is promoting alternative fuels along with electric vehicles but registration of vehicles with conventional engines will not stop.

Addressing an event of industry body Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in a virtual manner, Gadkari said that the government is in favor of faster adoption of electric vehicles. Apart from this, the government also wants to increase the use of alternative fuels like ethanol, bio-LNG and green hydrogen. Despite this, the government will not stop the registration of vehicles running on Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), he said. “I think we don’t need to make anything mandatory,” he said.

Gadkari said that he is also trying to promote the use of 50 percent ethanol in ATF, a fuel used in aircraft. He said that people are liking electric vehicles and the sales of these vehicles have also increased. He said that about 250 startups are engaged in the development of e-vehicles and going forward the cost of electric vehicles will come down. Describing green hydrogen as the fuel of the future, he said, “I myself am going to buy a car next month that will run on hydrogen.”
