I thought missing Olympics is not the end of the world, says Kidambi Srikanth

World Championship silver medalist Kidambi Srikanth said he was disappointed after failing to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics but told himself it would not end the world.

Srikanth had failed to deduct a ticket to Tokyo due to injury and the cancellation of several qualifier tournaments due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He believed in himself that his time would come and he continued his hard work in this direction. His hard work is the result of the historic silver medal in the men’s singles event of the World Championship.

“I was also disappointed about the Olympics. If you see, I was still the highest ranked player from India. Things changed with the cancellation of about seven to nine tournaments for Olympic qualification,” Srikkanth said on Tuesday.

“In the initial stage of qualification, I couldn’t play due to injury and in the second stage I was fully fit but the tournament didn’t happen,” he said.

The former world number one player said, “I reached the semi-finals of the Swiss Open after the game resumed in 2021. I was confident that I would get a ticket to the Olympics. But then many tournaments got cancelled. “

“That day I felt that not going to the Olympics was not the end of the world. I thought I would get more chances. I worked hard for it. I am glad it paid off,” he said.

Srikanth, who is working on his shortcomings and trying to become a better player, said he is focusing on his rhythm and fitness considering next year’s hectic schedule. The country’s first men’s singles player to win a silver medal at the World Championship said, “Now my only focus is to maintain this momentum and do better. Next year I have to participate in All England and then Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. It’s going to be a very important year.”

The 28-year-old from Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh said, “The next eight to 10 months are very important for me. So, I am talking to Gopi Anna (coach Pullela Gopichand). I will try and in the last few months Let me work on what went wrong.”

“I played the final, but of course there must have been some drawbacks, I have to work to become a better player,” he said.

Historic cricket series will be played between America and Ireland

Srikanth went down to Singapore’s Lo Keen Yew in the final despite taking a 9-3 and 18-16 lead. However, he is satisfied with his overall performance. “It feels great with this performance. It will be a very special tournament for anyone. The World Championship has a special significance of its own. I am very happy to play the final of such a big event,” he said.
