  • The first Test between India and South Africa is to be played from 26 December.

South Africa Test team captain Dean Elgar has heaped praise on Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah ahead of the three-match Test series. Elgar says that Bumrah can take advantage of the helpful pitches of the fast bowlers in South Africa. When Team India last visited South Africa in 2018, Bumrah made his Test debut during that time. However, that series was lost by India 1-2.

Bumrah has made his place among the best bowlers in the world by performing consistently over the years. In such a situation, Elgar acknowledged Bumrah’s danger in an online press conference and said that it would be difficult for his team to face the full Indian attack.

“He (Bumrah) is a world class bowler. If there is one bowler who can take advantage of the conditions in South Africa well, it would be Bumrah. But we don’t focus on one player. Overall India is a strong team.

“India have been a very good team for the last two to three years and have done well overseas in recent years,” said Elgar.

Elgar said veteran bowler Ravichandran Ashwin hasn’t had much success in South Africa but is one of the best spinners in world cricket. The South African captain said, “India’s bowling has improved a lot on the overseas tours. We have to be very careful against the bowling attack we are going to play against.

South Africa have suffered a major setback ahead of the opening match of the series. Their main bowler Enrique Norcia has been ruled out due to injury. Kagiso Rabada will lead the bowling attack along with Duane Oliver. He has returned to play for South Africa after the end of the Kolpak deal with Britain. Lungi Ngidi will also be in the team. Elgar is hopeful that the weather will clear before the opening Test of the series and the pitch will help the fast bowlers.

“There is always some moisture in South African wickets. Especially in highveld area (altitude area). I don’t see much change (from the last series). As a batsman, if you are disciplined and show your skills, you can score runs in Centurion.

Asked about the team’s batting line-up inexperience, he said, “Professional cricket is all about seizing the opportunity for you. If you don’t, another player is ready to take the place. But playing against the best team in the world is always tough. They have a very strong bowling attack and we know that.
