Chasing a target of 240, South Africa scored 118 for two on the third day of the second Test against India here on Wednesday. South Africa are now 122 runs behind the target. Captain Dean Elgar was on 46 and Rossi van der Dussen was on 11 when the stumps were dislodged. Shardul Thakur and Ravichandran Ashwin have taken a wicket each for India.

Earlier, after the century partnership of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, Hanuma Vihari’s useful contribution helped India set a target of 240 against South Africa in the second Test and the hosts continued their second innings till tea break on the third day here on Wednesday. I scored 34 runs without any loss. South Africa are now 206 runs behind the target. India, who scored 202 runs in their first innings, scored 266 runs in the second innings. South Africa took a 27-run lead after scoring 229 runs in the first innings. The record for the highest goal scorer in the Wanderers is in the name of Australia, who won by scoring 310 runs in 2011.

Struggling to score runs, Aiden Markram (24 not out) and captain Dean Elgar (10 not out) gave South Africa a comfortable start. In such a situation, the game of the third season has become important for both the teams. Pujara (53 off 86 balls) and Rahane (58 off 78 balls) scored half-centuries and shared a crucial 111-run partnership for the third wicket in 23.2 overs. Later Vihari (40 not out off 84 balls) combined with the last four batsmen to add 82 runs. In this, Shardul Thakur (28 off 24 balls) made an important contribution.

Kagiso Rabada (3 for 77) brought South Africa back with three wickets in the last 45 minutes of the first session. Marco Jensen (3 for 67) and Lungi Ngidi (3 for 43) took advantage of the latter. India started playing ahead of 85 runs for two wickets in the morning. Pujara and Rahane, who have been hit by critics due to poor form, knew that it would be difficult for them to find a place in the team going forward and hence they focused more on scoring runs. Pujara’s 62-ball half-century while Rahane’s 67-ball half-century shows that he prioritized scoring runs. Pujara hit 10 fours while Rahane hit eight fours and a six.

India’s score was at one point 155 for two and they looked in good shape, but after this Rabada took three wickets to get South Africa back. Rabada got Rahane caught by wicketkeeper Kyle Wren and Pujara was dismissed leg before. After that, he did not even allow Rishabh Pant to open the account, who caught the wicketkeeper by adopting an irresponsible attitude of playing the short pitch ball at half volley. Ravichandran Ashwin made 16 off 14 balls before being caught behind the wicket by Ngidi.

Shardul Thakur made some catchy shots on arrival and added 41 runs for the seventh wicket with Vihari. Thakur’s contribution in this was 28 runs, which included five fours and a six on Jenson. Jenson got him caught at the boundary line in the same over. Vihari then batted strategically. He added 17 useful runs with Jasprit Bumrah (7) and 21 with Mohammad Siraj (nil). Vihari hit six fours in his innings.
