In the 21st match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Gujarat Titans by 8 wickets. This is the first defeat of Hardik Pandya’s team this season. With this win, Hyderabad has 4 points and in the points table, the team remains in eighth place with 4 points. On the other hand, Gujarat Titans has slipped from third to fifth place after suffering the first defeat. They have 6 points from four matches after three wins and one loss.
Chasing the target of 163 runs given by Gujarat, Hyderabad had a slow start till the first four overs. But from the 5th over, captain Kane Williamson and his fellow opener Abhishek Sharma changed gears. After scoring 11 runs in the first 4 overs, both scored 31 runs in the next two overs. Hyderabad’s score in the powerplay was 42 for no loss. Both shared 64 runs for the first wicket.
After this Rashid Khan gave Gujarat the first breakthrough on the fifth ball of the 9th over and sent Abhishek Sharma to the pavilion for 42 runs. But Williamson held on to one end and added 40 runs for the second wicket with Rahul Tripathi. Unfortunately, Tripathi had to return for 17 runs with a retired hurt. The captain played an innings of 57 runs in 46 balls but Hardik made the match exciting by taking his wicket on the first ball of the 17th over. After this, Nicholas Pooran (34) gave Hyderabad victory.
Playing first after losing the toss, Gujarat Titans scored 162 runs for 7 wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Captain Hardik Pandya played an unbeaten 50 off 42 balls which included four fours and a six. Apart from Abhinav Manohar 35 and opener Matthew Wade 19, none of the players could contribute significantly. Hyderabad gave 22 runs from extras out of which 20 were from wide only.
Talking about the bowling, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and T. Natarajan took 2-2 wickets for Hyderabad. Apart from this, Marco Yanson and Umran Malik also got one success each. Removing the extras, the Hyderabad bowlers kept their grip on Gujarat tight throughout the innings. This was the reason that Hardik Pandya, who remained unbeaten after playing 42 balls, could only score 50 runs. Washington Sundar was the most economical bowler for 14 runs in 3 overs.
