Australia’s David Warner was going through a period of despair after captaining Sunrisers Hyderabad in the first leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 and losing a place in the playing XI in the second leg but he won the title for the team in the T20 World Cup concluded in UAE. Apart from playing a key role in the victory, becoming the Player of the Tournament showed that it would be a mistake to underestimate him.

When captain Aaron Finch walked into the press conference after Australia became the T20 world champion for the first time, he was faced with a flurry of questions about the team’s title-winning hero Warner.

In the press conference, he was asked how did you support Warner? No one expected him to become the player of the tournament.

Finch replied, “You didn’t expect that? I certainly did.” The last two months have been full of gloom and hope for Warner. He was disappointed after Sunrisers did not find a place in the playing XI of the IPL in the UAE itself but the T20 World Cup turned out to be a fairytale for him and he became the ‘Player of the Tournament’.

Warner amassed a total of 289 runs in the tournament, including a half-century in the high-pressure final. Finch said that he had told head coach Justin Langer that Warner would do well in the T20 World Cup. He claimed, “Without lying to a single word, I promise you that a few months ago I called Justin Langer and said don’t worry about Davy (Warner), he will be the Player of the Tournament.”

Finch, however, did not want to comment on the IPL chapter as he was not a part of it. “He (Warner) is a wonderful player. He is one of the greatest batsmen of all time and he is a fighter. He is such a player that when you put pressure on him, you get to see the best of David Warner.

Finch, however, believes that leg-spinner Adam Zampa could also be a contender for the player of the tournament, who bowled with great control in the middle overs. Warner’s wife Candice’s outrage and anguish can be understood from his sarcastic tweet.

He wrote, “Bad form, too old, slow!” Warner faced a lot of criticism for not performing as expected in some matches. The last two months have not been easy for Warner. The limited-overs legend was dropped from the team after a poor performance for Sunrisers in the Indian leg and then two matches in the UAE leg.

The removal of captaincy mid-season could be justified due to the team’s poor performance but the team management with the presence of Tom Moody, Trevor Bayliss and Muttiah Muralitharan dropped Warner from the playing XI. Warner was stopped from coming to the stadium for one day and then asked to stay away from the dugout.

During one of Sunrisers’ final matches, Warner was seen waving the team’s flag in the stands in the team jersey. One of his sixes on Sunday may have also fallen at the place where he was sitting that day. Things probably got so bad during the IPL that Warner’s request to bring drinks and talk to junior players during the strategic time out was also reportedly turned down.

Warner, however, had a worse time during the ball tampering scandal when he could not play cricket for a year due to a ban. Warner then laid the foundation for his comeback. He doubled the training time. He batted in the nets, practiced throw downs and did not leave the bat in his hand even in the hotel. For Warner, this win is as big as the 2015 World Cup.

“Certainly it’s on par with 2015 (World Cup), the loss (2010 T20 World Cup final) against England a decade ago, he said after the final on Sunday night, while praising his teammates. Warner said, “The team has great players, great support staff and we get good support all over the world, especially at home. Always full of enthusiasm, want to perform well. We were a little nervous in the final but the players did it.

Warner now has to face England in the Ashes. His fans need not be disappointed as far as IPL is concerned. He will be part of the old or new team during the big auction to be held this time or it may be that before that he will be selected from the player draft. If Warner gets a chance to play against Sunrisers, it will be an exciting match.
