Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah had criticized a section of Indian Muslims for celebrating the Taliban’s capture of power in Afghanistan and called it a cause for concern. The actor’s comment drew a sharp reaction from Muslims and many others on social media. In a statement, over 150 citizens belonging to different sectors condemned the backlash against Akhtar and Shah and said that they stand with them.
Responding to Akhtar’s remarks, the statement said, “We strongly condemn his attempts to intimidate him and stand by his right to express his views.” Regarding Shah’s remarks, the statement said, “He is merely reiterating the long, vibrant and tolerant tradition of Indian Islam, which in recent decades has been influenced by Saudi-influenced Wahhabi Islam, a trend that has been recognized by the Indian A large section of Muslims recognizes and condemns it.”
