Mirabai Chanu withdrew from World Championship and Commonwealth Senior Championships, know the reason

Highlights

  • Mirabai Chanu won a silver medal in the 49kg category at the Tokyo Olympics and is also a former world champion.
  • The Commonwealth Senior Championship was to be held in Singapore last year but could not be held due to Corona.
  • Mirabai Chanu has decided to pull out of both the events on the advice of coach Vijay Sharma.

New Delhi. Olympic silver medalist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has pulled out of the World Championships and Commonwealth Senior Championships to be held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from December 7-17. Mirabai, who won a silver medal in the women’s 49kg category at the Tokyo Olympics earlier this year, is also a former world champion. She withdrew from both the events on the advice of India’s head coach Vijay Sharma.

“Our main target (for the World Championship and Commonwealth Senior Championship) is to make the lifters qualify for next year’s Commonwealth Games,” Sharma told PTI. He said, “We had sent Meera’s name for the competition but her performance is not as good as of now. We are working on his snatch technique a little more. She is an Olympic medalist, so her qualification for the Commonwealth Games is not an issue.

The Commonwealth Senior Championship was to be held last year (in Singapore) but could not take place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will also be held at the same venue along with the World Championship. Twenty lifters from the country, including Youth Olympic gold medalist Jeremy Lalrinnunga, will participate in the tournament. Sharma said, “Meera has no problem but it is a strategic decision. She has been participating in competitions continuously for the last five years.

Mirabai, however, had said in an interview to PTI last month that she faces difficulty in lifting weights and is feeling pain. Asian Championship gold medalist Membrane Dalbehera will represent India in Mirabai’s category in this competition. She used to compete in the 45kg category earlier.
