Amravati: The Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Wednesday approved the Andhra Pradesh Motor Vehicle Taxation Amendment Bill 2021 to increase the tax on motor vehicles to generate more revenue. With the implementation of the new law, the state government is expected to get an additional revenue of Rs 409.58 crore annually. In the new law, the green tax on old motor vehicles has been increased manifold. Karnataka levies the highest tax on vehicles in the southern states, but Andhra Pradesh has come second after the new law.

Transport Minister Perni Venkataramaiah while placing this bill for the approval of the Assembly said that these changes have been made to rationalize the tax rates applicable on vehicles. The green tax rate on vehicles in Andhra Pradesh was last revised in 2006. According to the new tax rates, green tax of Rs 2,000 will be levied on motorcycles older than 15 years, while the amount will increase to Rs 5,000 if they are more than 20 years old. In the case of other vehicle categories, a green tax of Rs 5,000 will be levied on 15-year-old vehicles and Rs. 10,000 on 20-year-old vehicles.

Planning to give more tax incentives on buying new vehicles after converting old vehicles into scrap: Nitin Gadkari

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had recently said that the government is considering a proposal to give more tax related concessions on new vehicles purchased after converting old vehicles into scrap under the recently introduced National Vehicle Scrap Policy. Gadkari also said that the new scrap policy will reduce pollution. He said this while inaugurating the Scrap and Recycling Facility Center of Maruti Suzuki Toyotsu. This is the first such center to be approved by the government. The Minister of Road Transport and Highways had said, “The scrap policy will increase the Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue of both the Center and the states. I will discuss with the Finance Ministry how more tax related concessions can be given under the new policy.” Huh.”

Under the new policy, the Center had said that the states and union territories will give up to 25 percent rebate on toll tax on buying a new vehicle after converting old vehicles into scrap. Gadkari said that he is also urging the GST Council to explore the possibility of what more incentives can be given under the new policy. He had said, “The final decision will be taken by the Finance Ministry and the GST Council.” 40,000-40,000 crores of revenue will be received under the head.

He said that the scrap policy is important from the point of view of curbing pollution and generating employment. Gadkari had said, “Old vehicles cause more pollution than new vehicles. Hence they need to be removed. We expect that the scrap policy will increase sales by 10 to 12 percent.” He said, “Junk policy is also important for the economy. We will be able to get raw material at low cost. This can bring down the cost of production.” Gadkari also said that the Center is planning to set up at least 3-4 vehicle recycling or scrap centers in every district of the country.
