Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen on Monday backed the under-fired Indian team, saying players are not robots and they need fans’ support all the time. India are ranked fifth in the Group 2 points table and progress of the team depends on the performance of the other teams.

The team has faced severe criticism from fans for not performing as expected. Pietersen, who played 104 Tests and 136 One Day Internationals for England, defended India.

Pietersen tweeted in Hindi, “Sports has a winner and a loser. No player plays to lose. It is the greatest honor to represent our country. Please realize that the people of the game are not robots and They need support all the time.”

Former players questioned the sudden change in the batting order apart from the shot selection of the batsmen. Instead of opening the innings, Rohit Sharma came out to bat at number three. Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh also supported the team.

Harbhajan tweeted, “Don’t be harsh on your players. Yes we know them to play better cricket. Players are hurt the most after results like these. But New Zealand did a great job to win the match,” Harbhajan tweeted. He did exceptionally well in all departments.”
