Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu reached the women’s singles final of the Syed Modi International Badminton Tournament on Saturday. Sindhu booked a place in the final after fifth-seeded Russian rival Evgenia Kosetskaya suffered a retired hurt in the semi-finals.
After top seed Sindhu easily won the first game 21-11, Kosetskaya decided to withdraw from the second women’s singles semi-final match with a retired hurt. Former world champion Sindhu will take on compatriot Malvika Bansod in the final on Sunday. Malavika defeated another Indian, Anupama Upadhyay, 19-21 21-19 21-7 in the three-game semi-final.
The match was expected to be easy for Sindhu, considering the rhythm, world ranking and winning record against the opponent. Seventh-ranked Sindhu, who is ranked seventh in the BWF rankings, had beaten world number 28 Kosetskaya twice before Saturday’s match and the top Indian again maintained her dominating record against the Russian.
