Shoaib Malik opens up on seeing himself fit after his blazing knock against Scotland

Shoaib Malik is 39 years old but is still on the field and the veteran Pakistan batsman said that his international career has dragged on for so long because of his passion for fitness. Malik has been playing international cricket since last century. Some of his teammates were not even born then, but he is considered among the fittest players in the Pakistani team and has the ability to win matches on his own.

Malik showed his skills again in the ICC T20 World Cup on Sunday by scoring 54 off 18 balls against Scotland as Pakistan registered a 72-run win. “To be honest, when I look in the mirror, the passion to keep myself fit and most importantly, I am still enjoying cricket today. It helps,” Malik said at a post-match press conference. And in the end the team also benefits from it.”

“I believe if you want to stay fit, you have to practice every day and that’s what I am doing. I can’t say for sure if I will play for another year or two. There is an important competition going on now,” he said. And I’m not thinking about it.”

Pakistan topped Group 2 of Super 12 and will face Australia in the semi-finals on Thursday. Malik, who scored his first half-century in an ICC event since the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy, said, “Of course we have seen Australia, the way they are playing. They are playing really good cricket. We are also playing well.” But it will definitely be a tough challenge for both the teams.”

“There are still a few days left in the semi-finals so we will work out a strategy for it,” he said. Malik was not part of Pakistan’s initial 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup but was included in the squad after Sohaib Maqsood was ruled out due to injury.

“When the first team was announced, I was playing in the Caribbean Premier League. My name was not in the team. Of course I felt bad. I was very disappointed. I have seen a lot of teams that didn’t have my name, But it hurts when you are not part of the World Cup squad.”
