Rahkeem Cornwall’s useful innings of 63 runs for the seventh wicket between Kyle Myers and Jason Holder helped West Indies save the follow-on on Tuesday in the rain-hit third day of the first Test against Sri Lanka. However, in the opening match of the two-match series, the team is on the verge of falling behind by a huge margin in the first innings.

Only 38 overs could be played on the third day due to rain. West Indies scored 224 for nine in reply to Sri Lanka’s 386 runs and the team is 162 runs behind on the basis of first innings.

West Indies started the day with 113 runs for six wickets. Myers and Holder kept Sri Lanka away from success in the opening hour. Skipper Dimuth Karunaratne ended Myers’ 45-run innings with a catch off part-time bowler Dhananjay de Silva (1 for 11).

After a while, Holder (36) was run by Praveen Jayavrikrama. Cornwall became Suranga Lakmal’s first victim in the match after lunch. Batting at number 10, he scored 39 runs. As soon as he got out, the game had to be stopped due to rain which could not be started again. Jayavikrama and Ramesh Mendis took three wickets each for Sri Lanka.
