Jharsuguda: Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Monday said the number of airlines and routes have increased significantly in recent years due to the regional air connectivity scheme. The scheme, known as UDAN, aims to provide air connectivity to more places as well as make flying more affordable.

Speaking at the Udan Utsav celebrations at the Veer Surendra Sai airport in Jharsuguda, Odisha on Monday, Scindia said there were only 72 airports in the country after independence, but the number of airports has increased to 136 after 2014 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Has been.

“We have set a target to increase this number to 220 in the next five years which will include helipads and water aerodromes. The number of airlines, routes have also increased significantly over the years due to the advent of UDAN scheme,” he added. Scindia also flagged off a new air service between Shillong and Dimapur under the regional air connectivity scheme.

Scindia said that while all the airports across the country were witnessing a sharp drop in the number of passengers during the time of the COVID pandemic, the Jharsuguda airport was one of the few that witnessed something different. “During the pandemic, there was a 62 per cent drop in the number of passengers across the country, while Jharsuguda saw a drop of only 5 per cent. This shows the massive potential of the district and the region,” he said.

Scindia also announced a special Joy Ride, an air ride for the elderly and children during the Udan Utsav celebrations, which will also commemorate the ongoing Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
