Wholesale WPI inflation eases to 13.56 pc in Dec food items, veggies see price rise

New Delhi. Despite a sharp rise in food prices, wholesale price-based inflation eased to 13.56 per cent in December 2021 on softening fuel, energy and manufactured goods prices. Prior to this, inflation was increasing continuously for four months. Wholesale price-based inflation has remained in double digits for the ninth consecutive month since April. Inflation was 14.23 per cent in November last year while it was 1.95 per cent in December 2020.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said, “Inflation in December 2021 will be primarily driven by the growth of mineral oils, basic metals, crude petroleum and natural gas, chemical and chemical products, food products, textiles, paper and paper products.” It is more than the same month last year due to increase in prices of etc.

Inflation in manufactured goods stood at 10.62 per cent in December as against 11.92 per cent in the previous month. Inflation in the fuel and power segment rose to 32.30 per cent in December, as against 39.81 per cent in November. Inflation in food articles rose to 9.56 per cent in December from 4.88 per cent in November. Vegetable prices increased to 31.56 per cent in December from 3.91 per cent in November.
