World No. 1 tennis star Novak Djokovic may get a ‘medical exemption’ to play at the Australian Open, starting January 17 next year. However, tournament director Craig Tilly did not give any information in this regard on Wednesday.

Tilly confirmed on Wednesday that players and officials could be granted medical exemptions to enter Melbourne Park without vaccinations, raising hopes that Djokovic can take part in the opening match. He had refused to disclose his COVID-19 vaccination status.

Earlier, the organizers of the Australian Open had said that players will not be given medical exemption unless there is a genuine reason. But on Wednesday, Tilly acknowledged that some people would be exempted, which would be very few in number.

“The great thing is that all the players who come to Melbourne Park have been vaccinated. However, some may be exempted,” Tilly was quoted as saying by
